What is PCR?
Post-Consumer Recycled (PCR) plastic is a sustainable material created by reprocessing discarded end-user items—like milk jugs, bottles, and packaging—into new resins. It actively diverts waste from landfills, reduces greenhouse gas emissions, and decreases the demand for new, fossil-fuel-based virgin plastics.
How PCR Plastic is Made
The transformation from used household waste to new material follows a highly structured lifecycle:
01
Collection
Municipal programs collect consumer waste through local curbside bins or drop-off centers.
02
Sorting
Facilities separate items based on their resin identification code (e.g., PET, HDPE) using optical and manual sorting.
03
Cleaning & Shredding
Contaminants (like labels and caps) are removed. The clean plastic is then washed and ground into small flakes.
04
Pelletizing
The flakes are melted, filtered, and extruded into standardized plastic pellets.
05
Manufacturing
These pellets are sold to manufacturers to be blended with virgin resin and molded into new packaging or products.
Key Benefits
01
Drives the Circular Economy
It builds an ongoing loop where discarded products become raw materials for future production.
02
Lower Carbon Footprint
Manufacturing items with PCR plastic uses less energy and emits fewer greenhouse gases compared to creating brand-new virgin plastic.
03
Reduces Fossil Fuel Reliance
Sourcing PCR replaces the need to extract raw petroleum or natural gas for plastic formulation.
04
Meets Regulatory Standards
Incorporating PCR aligns with evolving Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) laws and recycled-content mandates.
How Flora-Pack has incorporated the use of PCR
Many of our existing programs are actively using PCR Material with the aim to incorporate PCR into 100% of our plastic offerings.

Reducing Carbon Footprint
Finding ways to reduce waste and our carbon footprint has been a top priority for Flora-Pack since beginning production in 2014.
We designed a smaller sleeve die-cut versus industry standard, same sizes available accommodate our client's needs but utilizing the cut to effectively use less plastic.
We manufacture our sleeves with a slightly thinner mil providing a sturdy sleeve with no compromise to quality or printing capabilities.
